Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday urged Delhiites to celebrate Indian handloom by posting pictures in traditional weaves on social media and tagging her to support the cause. Her appeal came during Vastra Katha 2025, an event organised to mark National Handloom Day at the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi.

“I invite every Delhiite to post their handloom outfits on social media, tag me, and support Indian handloom. Together, we can strengthen our economy, support our artisans, and celebrate our heritage,” Gupta said.

According to an official document, the day-long exhibition showcased the finest handloom and khadi products, followed by a fashion show highlighting the strength, beauty, and sustainability of indigenous fabrics.

The exhibition featured 24 unique stalls from across India, displaying GI-tagged textiles, live weaving demonstrations, and intricate embroidery.

Visitors got a glimpse of India’s rich weaving heritage through exhibits that included real zari Banarasi sarees by Mohammad Salam Ansari, Kancheepuram and Mysore silks by Mohan Varghese, Ladakh’s Pashmina, Telangana’s Ikat, Meghalaya’s Eri silk, Nagaland’s Chagan Masi shawls, Bihar’s Tassar silk with Madhubani prints, and Gujarat’s Patola and Double Ikat weaves.

Eco-friendly fabrics made from hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton were also featured at the event.

Vastra Katha concluded with a fashion show that traced the journey from ancient roots to modern global trends, presenting Indian fabrics in both traditional and contemporary styles.

Welcoming the artisans and thanking them for their craftsmanship, Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “Our goal is to bring handloom into every household, not just as a tradition but as a fashion icon. The work done here today will be talked about across Delhi and beyond.”
